Men's Basketball Falls to Binghamton
Feb. 5, 2006 VESTAL, N.Y.-- The University of Maine men's basketball fell to Binghamton 84-56 on Sunday afternoon in Vestal, N.Y. The Black Bears fall to 9-13 on the season and 4-7 in America East play. Binghamton improves to 10-11 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Binghamton jumped out to an early 6-0 lead behind four points from Sebastian Hermenier. Maine answered with a pair of hoops by Philippe Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon), including a three-point field goal. The Bearcats pushed their lead to 15-8, but a Jon Sheets (Grass Valley, Calif.) three -point field goal pulled Maine to within four points. Binghamton used a 15-2 run midway through the half to build a 30-13 lead. Maine stopped the run when Ernest Turner (Camden, N.J.) drained a three-point field goal. The Bearcats ended the half on a 14-4 run to take a 44-20 lead into halftime. Tchekane Bofia led Maine with nine first half point, while Ernest Turner grabbed four rebounds in the half. Binghamton shot 54.4 percent in the half, while Maine hit just 25.9 percent of its shots. The Bearcats continued to add to their lead in the second half. The Black Bears used a 16-2 run to cut into the Binghamton lead. Jon Sheets had a pair of three-point field goals during the run, while Ernest Turner had a fast-break dunk. The Black Bears cut a lead that had at one point been over 30 points to 17 points with 3:48 remaining in the game. Maine, however, could get no closer. Philippe Tchekane Bofia led Maine with 16 points which tied his career-high. Jon Sheets added 11 points, including three three-point field goals. He dished out four assists and grabbed two steals. Ernest Turner added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
