Maine Falls To Albany, N.Y., 67-54

The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to the University at Albany 67-54 on Saturday evening in Albany, N.Y. The Black Bears dip to 11-12 on the season and 6-8 in America East play. Albany improves to 12-11 overall and 8-6 in conference play.

The game featured an intense battle early on, as neither team was able to pull ahead. Maine put together a 7-0 run midway through the half to grab a 24-19 lead. The Black Bears were able to extend that lead to 28-20, but Albany scored four unanswered points to pull to within four points. Maine answered with a hoop by Mark Flavin (Weymouth, Mass.) but Albany countered with three-point field goal with just under four minutes to play in the half.

Albany was able to end the half on a 6-2 run and the two teams finished the first half in a 35-35 tie. Flavin led the Black Bears with 10 points in the half. Chris Markwood (South Portland, Maine) had eight points, while Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) scored six points and pulled down six rebounds. Maine shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the first half, as it connected on 15-of-28 shots. Albany shot 35.1 percent as it hit 13-of-37 shots. Both teams were 4-of-8 from behind the three point arc.

Albany scored two quick hoops in the second half, but Maine answered with a pair of free throws by David Dubois (St.-Gabriel, Quebec) and a hoop by Flavin. The Great Danes then scored eight unanswered points, including a three-point field goal by Brent Wilson to take a 47-39 advantage. Albany continued to add to its lead as it was able to hold Maine scoreless for over four minutes in the middle of the second half. Maine broke its scoreless drought with a hoop by Joe Campbell (Bangor, Maine) with 7:11 remaining.

The two teams continued to battle the remainder of the game, but Maine was never able to get the deficit under 10 points. Flavin led Maine with 14 points. Joe Campbell finished with 10 points and tied for the team lead with eight rebounds. Chris Markwood and Chris Bruff (Bloomfield, Conn.) each added eight points for Maine. Maine finished the game shooting 44.0 percent from the floor.

The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, February 16 when they travel to Northeastern for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
