Maine Falls At Home To Vermont 90-75

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Vermont 90-75 on a cold, snowy night in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears fall to 11-15 with the loss and 6-8 in America East play. League-leading Vermont improves to 20-6 overall and 12-1 in conference play.

Chris Bruff (Bloomfield, Conn.) was named the America East Player of the Game for Maine. He finished with 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Marques Blakely was named the America East Player of the Game for Vermont. He finished with a career-high 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The two teams traded leads early in the game. Maine took a 9-8 lead when Jon Sheets (Grass Valley, Calif.) hit a jumper in the lane with 14:43 remaining in the first half. Maine pushed the lead to 15-10 when Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) grabbed a rebounds and put it back up with 13:11 remaining in the first half. Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) then drained a trey giving Maine an 18-10 lead with 12:56 left in the half.

Vermont answered with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 22-22. Marques Blakely had six of Vermont's 12 points during the run. Sheets ended the Vermont run with a three-pointer from the top of the key for Maine. Vermont took a 33-30 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the first half when Mike Trimboli hit a jumper. Reed drained a long three-pointer for the Black Bears with just under four minutes remaining in the half to tie the game at 35-35.

Vermont ended the half on a 9-0 run to take a 44-35 lead into intermission. Blakely had four points during the run for the Catamounts, while Martin Klimes had three.

Maine was led by Kevin Reed in the first half who had 14 points in the first half, while Sheets added seven. Vermont was led by Blakely who had a career-high 16 points in the first half alone. Chris Holm and Klimes each added eight.

Mike Trimboli hit four three-point field goals early in the second half as Vermont pushed its lead to 65-47 with 14:20 remaining in the game. Vermont continued to add to its lead midway through the second half.

Maine used a 12-4 run midway through the second half to get back into the game. Chris Bruff scored 12 straight points for the Black Bears as Maine cut the deficit to 10 points at 69-59 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. Trimboli answered with a long jumper to stop the Maine run. The Catamounts then pushed their lead to 76-59 with 6:26 remaining in the game.

Vermont pushed its lead to 20 points, tying it largest lead of the game, when Colin McIntosh drained a pair of free throws with 4:30 remaining. Maine would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the game.

Bruff finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Reed chipped in with 17 points and five steals. He moved to fourth place on Maine's all-time scoring list with 1,539 career points. He also drained this 300th career three-point field goal in the win. Junior Bernal added 14 points, while Jon Sheets chipped in with 10 and a career-high six steals.

Blakely led Vermont with 24 points and seven rebounds. Mike Trimboli had 21 points, 17 of which were scored in the second half and six rebounds. Chris Holm added 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, while Martin Klimes scored 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, February 17 when they travel to Northeastern for a 1 pm game.
