Men's Basketball Falls at Northeastern 71-61
Feb. 17, 2007 BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Northeastern 71-61 on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. in the final non-conference game of the season. The Black Bears dip to 11-16 on the season, while Northeastern improves to 10-18. Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) led Maine with 14 points and moved to third place on Maine's all-time scoring list. Northeastern jumped out to an early 12-4 lead behind back-to-back three-point field goals by Bobby Kelly. Kevin Reed's jumper with 13:00 minutes remaining in the first half gave him 1,541 career points, tying Francois Bouchard (1989-94) for third place on Maine's all-time scoring list. Maine pulled to within six points at 14-8 with Reed's hoop. The Huskies built their lead to 22-8 with 9:16 to play in the half. Maine hit back-to-back hoops by Chris Bruff (Bloomfield, Conn.) and Philippe Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) to pull to within 10 points at 22-12. Reed hit a three-point field goal with 42 seconds remaining in the first half and that moved him into solo possession of third place on Maine's all-time scoring list. Northeastern took a 35-19 lead into halftime. Bruff and Olli Ahvenniemi (Vaasa, Finland) each had six points in the first half, while Reed added five. Jon Sheets (Grass Valley, Calif.) drained a three-point field goal just seconds into the second half for the Black Bears. Trailing 48-28, Maine used a 4-0 run to pull to within 16 points at 48-32. Maine pulled to within 10 points when Jon Sheets drained a trey with 9:02 remaining in the game. Northeastern's Adrian Martinez answered with a three-point field goal of his own and the Huskies extended their lead to 13 points once again.
Tchekane Bofia drained a long jumper with just over three minutes left in the game and Maine cut the deficit to just nine points at 58-49. Northeastern answered back to take the double-digit lead once again. A pair of Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) free throws with just over two minutes remaining pulled Maine to within seven points at 60-53. The Black Bears, however, would get no closer. Reed led Maine with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the game. Bruff added 12 points for the Black Bears. Socoby chipped in with 11 points in the game and Sheets added nine. Bennet Davis led Northeastern with 19 points, while Bobby Kelly added 17. The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, February 22 when they travel to UMBC for a 7 pm game. -U-M- |
