Maine looked as if it would put some distance between itself and Hartford, building a 39-34 lead, but the Hawks answered back to tie the game for the fourth time on dunk by David Ruffin. Once again, the Black Bears went up by five points after a three-pointer by Campbell, but Hartford answered yet again.

Charles Ford hit a pair of free throws for Hartford with 2:24 remaining to knot the score for the eighth and final time. Mark Flavin (Weymouth, Mass.) scored on a layup and was fouled in the process with 2:13 remaining. He hit the ensuing free throw to give Maine a three point cushion.
