ORONO, Maine- The men's basketball team dropped a close game to Stony Brook Saturday afternoon by the score of 56-51. With the win, Stony Brook improved to 6-21 overall and 3-12 in America East. Maine fell to 7-20 and 3-11 in league play. Maine was led by Mark Socoby (Houlton, ME.) who had 14 points and four rebounds while Ricky Lucas (Herndon, Va.) led the Seawolves with 14 points. In the first half, both teams got off to a slow start as Stony Brook held a six-to-one lead with 14 minutes to go in the first half. The lead was kept at five points when Stony Brook had an open shot but Mark Socoby came behind him and swatted the ball away. The score remained that way until the Black Bears went on an eight-to-three run as Robby Hanzlik (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Phil Tchekane Bofia drained three-pointers and Brian Andre made a layup to tie the game at nine. The Black Bears continued to pressure, and had a 15-to-11 lead with eight minutes to go in the first half. Maine kept up the hectic pace, and took a 22-to-11 lead on a thunderous dunk by Brian Andre (Bingham, ME.) with a little over four minutes to go in the first half. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way, and the Black Bears took a 27-17 lead into halftime. Maine was led by Hanzlik who had six points, three rebounds and three assists in the first half. Mark Socoby (Houton, ME.) had six points, three rebounds and two assists while Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added six points as well. The Black Bears went 10-for-31 from the floor while Stony Brook went six-for-26. Maine out-rebounded the Seawolves by a 24-to-18 margin.
Mitchell Beauford (Queens, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with six points and two rebounds in the first half. The Seawolves went on a run to open the second half, and closed the Black Bear lead to three points at 29-to-26, three minutes minutes into the second stanza. Maine responded as Owes drained a three-pointer, but the Seawolves kept making shots and went on to close the gamp to 32-30 with 14 minutes to go in the game. The Seawolves took the lead briefly, but after two Socoby three-pointers and a foul shot the Black Bears regained the advantage 46-39 with just over five minutes to go. Socoby increased the lead on a foul shot after Emanuel Neto (Luanda, Angola) was called for a technical foul after shoving Tchekane Bofia. The Seawolves came back, and took a 51-48 lead with a minute and a half to go. The Black Bears made a layup, but could not get it closer as the Seawolves made their free throws the rest of the way. The Black Bears out-rebounded Stony Brook by a 37-32 margin, but the Seawolves went 20-for-23 from the free throw line to distance themselves from the Black Bears down the stretch. Owes ended up with 12 points and three rebounds while Beauford had 13 points for Stony Brook.
