Maine Falls To Boston University, 66-50

BOSTON, Mass.--The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Boston University 66-50 on Thursday night in Boston, Mass. The Black Bears fall to 12-14 on the season and 7-10 in America East play, while the Terriers improve to 20-6, 14-3 in conference play. Boston University jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, but Maine answered with a three-point field goal by Chris Markwood (South Portland, Maine) to pull to within three points. The Black Bears then went on a 10-2 run to grab a 17-16 advantage. Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) keyed the run with a pair of three-point field goals. The Terriers answered with a 10-1 run of their own to pull ahead 26-18 with 7:26 remaining in the first half. Boston University held Maine scoreless for a span of 5:42 during the first half. During that time, the Terriers extended their lead to as many as 11 points. Maine answered with a pair of free throws by Joe Campbell (Bangor, Maine) and a single free throw by Reed to close the gap to 29-21. The Terriers ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a 35-21 lead into halftime. Reed led the Black Bears with 10 points in the first half, while David Dubois (St.-Gabriel, Quebec) chipped in with four. Maine began the second half with a 6-0 run to cut the Boston University lead to eight points. The Terriers answered with five points of their own. Jason Hight (Westbrook, Maine) scored five straight points for Maine to pull Maine to 34-44. The Terriers pulled ahead once again, but the Black Bears made it a 10-point game once again with a trey by Markwood with just under 12 minutes to play. The defense for both team then took over as Maine was held scoreless for over five minutes during the second half, while the Black Bears held the Terriers scoreless for close to six minutes. Maine came out of the drought with a 6-0 run to pull to 44-50. The Terriers were able to counter with a 7-2 run to push the score to 46-57 with 3:13 remaining.
The Terriers ended the game on a 7-2 run to earn the 66-50 win. Reed led Maine with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Markwood added 10 points. Campbell finished with a team-high eight rebounds in the game. The Black Bears return home for their final game of the season at Alfond Arena on Sunday, February 27 when they host Vermont at 1 p.m. Before the game Maine will honor seniors Mark Flavin, David Dubois, Joe Campbell and Chris Markwood.
