Men's Hoop Ends Regular Season With Win Over Vermont
ORONO, Maine--Mark Flavin (Weymouth, Mass.) scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the University of Maine men's basketball team past Vermont 87-66 on senior day at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine in front of 2,714 fans. Joe Campbell added a season-high 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Black Bears in his final game at Alfond Arena. The Black Bears improve to 13-14 on the season and 8-10 in America East play, while the Catamounts fall to 21-6, 16-2 in America East play.
"We were ready to play," said UMaine head coach Ted Woodward. "I thought that our intensity was good right from the start. It didn't really matter who we were playing. Obviously, they were missing a couple of key guys, but our defense and our rebounding were extremely strong from the start. I am happy because I thought that we played hard for 40 minutes." Maine jumped out to an early 7-0 lead just 3:15 into the contest. Vermont, who was playing without leading scorers Taylor Coppenrath and T.J. Sorrentine, fought back, grabbing a 14-12 lead. The two teams traded leads until late in the half when Maine went on an 8-0 run to take a 39-28 lead. Vermont hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the first half to cut the lead to eight points at the half. The Black Bears, who came out flying in the second half, went on an 11-0 run to build their lead to 50-31. Campbell hit a pair of baskets, while Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) drained a three-pointer during the run. Maine built the lead to 20 points with a three-pointer by Reed with 14:41 remaining in the game. The Black Bears used a 10-2 run midway through the half to increase their lead to 28 points, 72-44 with just under nine minutes to play in the game. Maine extended its lead to 30 points, the largest margin of the game, before the Catamounts ended the contest on a 14-5 run to pull within 21 points. Maine shot 51.7 percent in the game from the floor, including 62.1 percent in the second half. The Black Bears shot 50 percent from behind the three-point arc as they connected on 11-of-22 shots. The 11 three-pointers ties the season-high for three-pointers in a game. Maine also drained 11 treys in the first outing against the Catamounts this season. Flavin recorded his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. He was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Reed added 17 points, including five three-point field goals. Campbell finished with 16 points, while Jason Hight (Westbrook, Maine) had a career-high 11 points and four steals. He hit three three-point field goals. Kyle Cieplicki, who led the Catamounts with 14 points, nearly tripled his previous career-high of five points. Ryan Schneider chipped in with 10 points. Germain Mopa Njila had six points and a game-high five steals for the undermanned Catamounts. Before the game, Maine honored seniors Flavin, Campbell, Chris Markwood (South Portland, Maine) and David Dubois (St.-Gabriel, Quebec) who were each playing their final game at Alfond Arena. Maine finishes the regular season tied for fifth place in the America East standings. The Black Bears lose the tiebreaker with Binghamton and will be the sixth seed in the upcoming America East Tournament, March 4-6 at Binghamton University's Events Center. The Black Bears will face Boston University on Saturday, March 5 at approximately 8:30 p.m.
