Black Bears Upend Terriers On Markwood's Late 3-Pointer; Advance To America East Semis
VESTAL, N.Y. - Chris Markwood (South Portland, Maine) hit a three-point field goal with 2.2 seconds remaining to give Maine a 47-45 win over Maine in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday night at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. Th win gives Maine a berth in America East semifinals on Sunday afternoon. Maine will face Northeastern at 2:30 p.m.
"Obviously, it was a hard-fought game by both teams," said Maine head coach Ted Woodward. "We had guys step up and take critical shots." The first half was all defense as Boston University took an 18-13 lead into halftime. Maine shot 21.4 while holding the Terriers to 21.4 percent. Flavin led Maine on the glass with nine first-half rebounds. Boston University came out of the second half on a 7-0 run to build a 25-13 lead. Maine answered back with a pair of three-point field goals by Joe Campbell (Bangor, Maine) to cut the lead to 27-21. Markwood hit a layup and Jason Hight (Westbroook, Maine) drained a three-point to pull Maine to within one point. Maine took their its first lead of the second half when Ernest Turner (Camden, N.J.) hit a three. A Campbell layup gave Maine a four-point cushion. BU's Rashad Bell hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 39-39 with just 3:11 to play. Bell's layup with 2:32 remaining gave the Terries a 41-39 lead with 2:24 to play. Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) hit a three-pointer to give Maine a one-point lead with just under 2:30 to play. BU's Tony Gaffney then stole the ball and went in all alone for a dunk with 1:20 left to give BU a 43-31 lead. Reed hit a jumper to give Maine a 44-43 lead with just 17 seconds left. Maine was called for a foul and Chaz Carr hit a pair of free throws with just nine seconds remaining to give BU a 45-44 edge. With nine seconds remaining, Maine inbounded the ball and went the length of the court. Markwood's hit a three from the top of the arc with 2.2 seconds remaining. BU's Carr had a shot at the buzzer that bounced off the backboard. Mark Flavin (Weymouth, Mass.) had 11 points and 10 boards for Maine. Joe Campbell also added 11 points in the win.
