Maine Cruises Past Fisher College, 81-36
ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's basketball set a school record with 23 steals against Fisher and played hard all night long to defeat the Fisher Falcons 81-36 in front of a crowd of 1,148 at Alfond Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The previous record of 21 steals was set on January, 16, 1999 against New Hampshire.
The Black Bears went on a 21-0 run after being tied with the Falcons at 14, six minutes into the game to put the game out of reach early against Fisher. The Black Bears played tenacious defense, and had four players score at least seven points in the half. Leading the way was Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) who had 11 points in the first half to go along with six rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Brian Andre was also a big contributor, netting 10 points and grabbing four rebounds. Jordan Cook (Hampden, Maine) set a career-high in the first half with eight points, besting his previous high of six points in a game set this season against Richmond on Nov. 5. Cook also added five rebounds in the first half, tying his career best. Robby Hanzlik (Greenwood Village, Colo.) met his season average for steals in the first half with four. The Black Bears forced 17 turnovers while only turning the ball over five times. Maine finished with 10 steals in the first half. Jason Hight (Westbrook, Maine) finished the half tying his own personal best with four assists and also contributing a couple of steals. The Black Bears opened the second half in the same fashion they fisnished the first half. Maine went on a 13-4 run six minutes into the second half. The Falcons of Fisher College could not keep up with the Black Bears as they would force a turn over and run the other way. Robby Hanzlik had three more steals to get his total for the night up to seven, one off the Maine record last set by Allen Ledbetter on Jan. 16, 1999 against New Hampshire. Brian Andre also had a career night. The big man had 16 points and three blocks, both career bests. Jordan Cook ended up with a career high 15 points as he was on fire form the field, going seven for nine. Cook also had a personal best of seven rebounds. Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) also played a solid game, finishing with six points, five rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals in only 19 minutes. The Black Bears out-rebounded their third straight opponent by a margin of 54-46. The Black Bears continue play on Saturday, Nov.17 when they take on the Terriers of St. Francis.
