Men's Basketball Wins 100 Club Classic Championship

KENNESAW, Ga.--The University of Maine men's basketball team won the 100 Club Classic Championship over Kennesaw St. by the score of 60-47 on Saturday night in Kennesaw, Ga. With the win, Maine goes to 2-0 on the season while Kennesaw St. is 1-1. Maine was led by Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) who had 16 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In the first half, the Black Bears opened up a 10-5 lead as Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) had six points in the first four minutes of the game. The Owls came back, and took the lead, 19-18 with just under four minutes to go in the first half. Maine came back, and finished the first half on an 8-to-2 run courtesy of two three-pointers from Socoby. Maine was led by Socoby who had six points, six rebounds and two assists in the first 20 minutes. McNally had six points and two assists and Barnies had six points in the first half as well. The Black Bears shot 52 percent from the field in the first half to the Owls' 24 percent. Maine went into halftime with a 26-21 lead. Maine opened up the second half on a 14-to-6 run to take a 40-27 lead. Five different Black Bears scored during the run. Kennesaw answered as the Owls went on an 8-to-2 run to close the Black Bear lead to 42-35 with just over eight minutes remaining. The Black Bears came back, outscoring the Owls 12-to-8 in the next six minutes to lock up the Championship. Socoby finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Barnies added six rebounds to go with his 16 points. Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) added six assists.
Maine shot 55 percent from the field to the Owls'27 percent. Maine outrebounded Kennesaw St. by a 36-to-34 margin. Maine returns to action on Wednesday when the Black Bears travel to take on Princeton at 7 p.m.
