Black Bears Drop Tough Game To Providence
Nov. 27, 2007
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island-- The men's basketball team dropped a tough game to the Big East's Providence College Friars, 78-to-48. With the win, Providence improved to 4-1, while Maine fell to 3-4. Maine was led by Brian Andre (Bingham, Maine) who had 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Providence was led by Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, New York) who had 17 points and 13 rebounds. Maine played tough the first 10 minutes, hanging right with the Friars.. Maine got key contributions form Jordan Cook (Hampden, Maine), who had eight points and three rebounds, and Andre, who played tough in the paint. Jason Hight (Westbrook, Maine) also played well from the guard position, getting six points and two rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Despite the Friars racing out to a 12-point lead, Maine battled back to close the gap to only six with just over seven minutes remaining. Junior Bernal was key in the Black Bears staying close, getting four points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Despite falling behind by 12 at halftime, the Black Bears played solid, not giving the Friars many open looks. McDermott led Providence in the first half with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Friars out-rebounded the Black Bears 24-to-11 in the first half. In the second half, Providence extended their lead, but Maine would not go away, constantly fighting for rebounds and loose balls. Maine, America East's youngest team, played with intensity until the end, but had trouble with the more experienced Providence team. Andre had three powerful dunks in a row in the second half that brought some noise from the visiting crowd. For the game, Maine was out-rebounded 40-to-35, but played much better on the glass in the second half. The Black Bears continue play on Dec. 1, when they take on the New Jersey Institute of Technology for a 12pm game.
