Men's Basketball Falls at South Alabama

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to the University of South Alabama by the score of 71-59 on Friday night in Mobile, Ala. in the first round of the USA Basketball Classic. Maine and South Alabama are both now 3-3 on the season. Maine was led by Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) who had a game-high 28 points. The Black Bears fell behind early 15-6 six minutes into the game as the Jaguars only missed two field goals during the span. The Black Bears continues to play hard, but the Jaguars were on fire and eventually grew their lead to 30-11 with just over seven minutes to go. Socoby scored the next five points to take a bite out of the lead, but South Alabama came back and took a 40-20 lead into halftime. The Jaguars were on fire from the field, going 15-for-26 while Maine went 6-for-24 in the first stanza. Maine fought back hard in the second half,outscoring the Jaguars 11-to-4 in the first three minutes that included three-pointers from Socoby, Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) and Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) to cut the lead to 13. Maine continued to push, and traded baskets with the Jaguars until the last few minutes when the Black Bears made another run to cut the lead to 12, but just ran out of time against a team that was ranked in the top-30 in the country last season. Maine outscored the Jaguars 39-to-31 in the second half, and shot 50 percent from three-point range while holding the Jaguars to 20 percent from behind the arc during the second 20 minutes. McNally had 10 rebounds for Maine while McLemore added 10 points. Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) had four assists with four steals. Maine continues play tomorrow against Tulane at 6 p.m. Fans can listen to the game live on the Black Bear Sports Network.
