Dec. 8, 2008

Final Stats

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team defeated Colgate by the score of 67-56 on Monday at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. With the win, Maine is now 5-4 on the season while Colgate is 2-6. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) who had 21 points and three assists. Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) also had a nice game with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.

In the first half, Maine held Colgate scoreless for eight minutes in the middle of the half that allowed the Black Bears to break open a 13-13 lead. The Black Bears went on a 10-to-nothing run courtesy of five points each from Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) during the Raiders' scoreless streak.

The nicest play of the half came when Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove down the lane, did a 180 degree spin and dished it off to Socoby for an easy layup.

Maine was led by Bernal, Socoby and McNally who each had 11 points. Bernal also added four rebounds and three assists in the first half. The Black Bears shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded the Raiders 18-to-nine in the first half to take a 35-19 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Colgate trimmed the lead to 39-32 with just over 13 minutes to go as Colgate made a surge. The Raiders then closed the game to 47-45 on an Joe Hoban three-pointer with just under seven minutes to go.

The Black Bears remained poised, and Socoby scored the next four points to increase the lead to six points with five minutes remaining.

The teams traded baskets, and a Gerald McLemore three-pointer with just under three minutes to go gave Maine a lead it would not relinquish. The Black Bears made free throws down the stretch to provide some insurance.

McNally finished with 13 points and six rebounds while McLemore added 11 points and four rebounds.

Ben Jonson had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Colgate.

Maine and Colgate both shot 40 percent from the field on the evening. Maine outrebounded Colgate by a 34-to-27 margin.
