Ernest Turner Leads Maine Past Dartmouth

ORONO, Maine.-- The University of Maine men's basketball team defeated Dartmouth on Tuesday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 3-6 on the season, while Dartmouth falls to 1-3. Dartmouth jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the game, but Maine was able to answer back. The Black Bears used a 7-0 run to tie the game at 9-9. Ernest Turner (Camden, N.J.) had four points during the run for Maine. Dartmouth's Mike Lang hit a three-point field goal to stop the Maine run. The Black Bears responded and took their first lead of the game when Rashard Turner (Peekskill, N.Y.) had a steal and a fast break layup. The two teams continued to battle the next few minutes and trade leads. Maine used an 8-2 to turn a three point deficit into a three point lead. Maine built the lead to as many as five point when Ernest Turner had a steal and a fast break layup. The Black Bears took a 30-27 lead into halftime. Ernest Turner led Maine with 15 points and three steals in the first half. Maine shot 46.2 percent in the half, as the Black Bears connected on 12-off-26 shots. Maine used a 4-0 run to start the first half and extended its lead to 34-27. The Big Green responded and pulled to within one point, 40-39, with 12:25 remaining in the game. Dartmouth took a 42-40 lead when Jason Meyer drained a three-point field goal. Maine answered right back with a three by Ernest Turner. The two teams continued to trade leads until Maine was able to build a 55-50 lead with 3:48 remaining in the game. Philippe Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) hit a pair of free throws to extend the Maine lead to 57-50. The Big Green hit a jumper to make it 57-52. The score remained 57-52 until Rashard Turner hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to make it 59-52. Dartmouth answered with a three-point field goal by by Michael Giovacchini to make it a 59-55 game.
Rashard Turner was key from the free throw line down the stretch as he hit six of six shots from the foul line. Ernest Turner led Maine with 21 points and five steals. Rashard Turner chipped in with 16 points, six assists and four rebounds. Olli Ahvenniemi (Vaasa, Finland), Tchekane Bofia and Chris Bruff (Bloomfield. Conn.) each added nine points for Maine. Maine shot 47.6 percent in the game, while Dartmouth hit 45.1 percent of its shots. The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, December 15 when they travel to New Brunswick, N.J. to face Rutgers at 7:30 p.m.
