Men's Basketball Drops Close Game
ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine men's basketball team dropped a close game to Mt. St. Mary's 66-59. With the win, Mt. St. Mary's improved to 5-4, while Maine fell to 4-6. Jeremy Goode (Charlotte, North Carolina) led the Mount with 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. Junior Bernal (Manhattan, New York) led the Black Bears with 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Maine jumped out to a 10-to-2 lead five minutes into the game on a free throw from Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, New York). The Black Bears held the lead for most of the first half until Goode made a jumper for the Mount with three seconds left in the first half that gave Mt. St. Mary's a one point edge at halftime, 24-to-23. Maine shot 38 percent for the half, and out-rebounded the Mount by a 22-to-15 margin, but could not overcome the 14 first half turnovers to grab the lead before heading to the locker room. Bernal had seven points in the first 20 minutes, while Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) added four points and three rebounds. The Mount were led by Will Holland (Houston, Texas) who had seven points and Goode who followed with six points and three rebounds in the first half. In the second half, the Mount went on an 18-to-7 run in the first eight minutes to take a 12 point lead with 12 minutes to go in the game. The Black Bears fought back, but could not get the key stop when they needed, and the closest they got was seven points with only seconds to go in the game. For the game, the Black Bears shot 38 percent from the field on 20-of-53 shooting, and the Mount went 20-for-52 from the filed. Maine out-rebounded Mt. St. Mary's 38-to-33, but also had 20 turnovers the Mount's 13. Phil Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) had a nice game for the Black Bears with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, and six rebounds. Chris Vann (Woodbridge, Virginia) added 16 points for Mt. St. Mary's. Maine returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 22, when the Black Bears take on the University of Connecticut at the Hartford Civic Center for a 1pm game. Maine returns home on Dec. 28 to play the University of Maine-Augusta for a 6pm game at the Alfond Arena.
