Men's Basketball Falls to Canisius

Dec. 30, 2008

Box Score

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Canisius by the score of 56-43 on Tuesday evening at the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. With the loss, Maine is 5-8 on the season while Canisius is now 5-7. Maine was led by Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) who had 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Black Bears took a quick 7-1 lead to open the game after a nice layup by Socoby when he cut hard to the basket and Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) fed him the ball for the bucket.

Canisius came back, and tied the game at 16 on a three-pointer by Tomas Vazquez-Simmons. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way, but Canisius made a late three-pointer to take a 24-23 halftime lead.

Maine was led in the first stanza by Barnies who had six points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Socoby each had five points. Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, N.Y.), in his first action in eight games after suffering an injury, was a bolt of energy and contributed four rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist.

In the second half, Canisius scored the first 11 points to take a 12-point lead. The resilient Black Bears came back, and went on an 11-to-2 run to close the Golden Griffin to just three points courtesy of six points from Socoby during the stretch.

Maine continued to battle hard the rest of the way, but the Griffins pulled ahead and made a couple shots at the end to push the game just out of reach of the Black Bears.

Barnies finished with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) had nine points and four rebounds.

Chris Gadley had 18 points and 25 rebounds to lead Canisius. The Golden Griffins shot 35 percent from the floor while Maine shot 28 percent. Canisius outrebounded Maine by a 50-37 margin.
