Men's Basketball Travels to Binghamton

The University of Maine men's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night when it fell to Hartford 62-69. The Black Bears fall to 9-12 on the season and 4-6 in America East play. Binghamton dropped a 74-78 decision at UMBC on Thursday night. The Bearcats are 9-11 on the season and 6-3 in conference play. A LOOK BACK: The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Hartford 62-69 on Thursday night. With Hartford leading 8-7, Maine used a 21-7 run to build a 28-15 lead. Maine used three three-point field goals by Rashard Turner (Peekskill, N.Y.) during the run and one each by Ernest Turner (Camden, N.J.) and Jon Sheets (Grass Valley, Calif.). Hartford's Aaron Cook kept the Hawks in the game with 22 points in the first half. The Hawks, however, could get no closer than six points in the half. Maine took a 40-33 lead into halftime. The Black Bears extended their lead to 10 points with 18:21 remaining in the game when Philippe Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) converted a conventional three-point play. Hartford used a 17-7 run to tie the game at 53-53. Maine answered back to a pair of hoops by Rashard Turner to regain a four-point lead, but Cook, who finished the game with a career-high 40 points, answered with a pair of three-point field goals. Hartford went 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game to ensure the victory. Rashard Turner hit his sixth three-point field goal with 18 seconds remaining, but it was not enough.Rashard Turner led Maine with a career-high 24 points. He tied his season-high with six three-point field goals. Tchekane Bofia added 14 points, while Olli Ahvenniemi (Vaasa, Finland) had seven rebounds and three blocks. SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS: Maine is led by Ernest Turner who is scoring 15.6 points per game. He is grabbing 4.0 rebounds a game and leads Maine with 1.5 steals per game. Rashard Turner is adding 10.4 points per game. He is leading Maine with 3.0 assists per game. Philippe Tchekane Bofia is chipping in with 9.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds a contest. Jon Sheets is adding 9.5 points per game. He leads Maine with 50 three-point field goals and is second on the team, averaging 2.9 assists per game. Chris Bruff (Bloomfield, Conn.) is chipping in with 6.7 points per game. Olli Ahvenniemi is adding 6.2 points per game. He leads Maine in rebounds with 6.3 per game and in blocks with 2.7 a game. ?Maine is averaging 64.7 points per game, while its opponents are averaging 66.1. The Black Bears are shooting 41.9 percent from the floor, while their opponents are connecting 41.5 percent of the time. SHEETS NEARING THREE-POINT LEADERS: Jon Sheets is among the single season three-point field goal leaders at Maine. He currently has 50 three-point field goals which ranks 14th on the single season leaders list. TCHEKANE BOFIA NAME AMERICA EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: ? For the third time this season, Philippe Tchekane Bofia has been named the America East Rookie of the Week. He averaged 9.0 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game in a pair of Maine wins. Tchekane Bofia was also named America East Rookie of the Week on December 19 and January 2. Rashard Turner FOR SIX: For the second time this season, Rashard Turner drained six three-point field goals in a game. He first accomplished the feat on January 22 at UMBC when he had six three-point field goals in the first half. Turner followed that up with six three-pointers in Maine's loss to Hartford on February 2. He has 34 three-point field goals on the season.
