Men's Basketball Travels to Northeastern

The University of Maine men's basketball team will play its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, February 17 when it travels to Northeastern for a 1 pm tilt. The Black Bears are 11-15 on the season and coming off a 75-90 loss to Vermont on Wednesday night. Northeastern is 9-18 on the season and fell to Georgia State 65-71 on Wednesday. A LOOK BACK: The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Vermont 75-90 on Wednesday night in Orono. The two teams traded leads early in the game. Maine took a 9-8 lead when Jon Sheets (Grass Valley, Calif.) hit a jumper in the lane with 14:43 remaining in the first half. Maine pushed the lead to 15-10 when Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) grabbed a rebound and put it back up with 13:11 remaining in the first half. Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) then drained a trey giving Maine an 18-10 lead with 12:56 left in the half. ?Vermont answered with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 22-22. Marqus Blakely had six of Vermont's 12 points during the run. Sheets ended the Vermont run with a three-pointer from the top of the key for Maine. Vermont took a 33-30 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the first half when Mike Trimboli hit a jumper. Reed drained a long three-pointer for the Black Bears with just under four minutes remaining in the half to tie the game at 35-35. ?Vermont ended the half on a 9-0 run to take a 44-35 lead into intermission. Vermont's Mike Trimboli hit four three-point field goals early in the second half as Vermont pushed its lead to 65-47 with 14:20 remaining in the game. Vermont continued to add to its lead midway through the second half. ?Maine used a 12-4 run midway through the second half to get back into the game. Chris Bruff scored 12 straight points for the Black Bears as Maine cut the deficit to 10 points at 69-59 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. Trimboli answered with a long jumper to stop the Maine run. Maine would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the game. Bruff led Maine with 21 points, seven rebounds three assists and two blocks. Kevin Reed added 17 points, four rebounds and five steals. Junior Bernal chipped in with 14 points, while Jon Sheets added 10 points and six steals. SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS: Maine is led by Kevin Reed who is averaging 13.8 points per game. He is pulling down a team-high 6.0 rebounds a game. Reed has 66 three-point field goals on the season. Jon Sheets is chipping in with 10.9 points per game. He is averaging a team-high 3.0 assists per game and 1.6 steals per game. Sheets has a team-high 67 three-point field goals on the season. Junior Bernal is scoring 10.3 points per game. He is dishing out 2.9 assists per game and grabbing 1.6 steals per game. Chris Bruff is scoring 10.2 points per game and grabbing 5.8 rebounds a contest. Philippe Tchekane Bofia is averaging 7.1 points per game and 3.8 rebounds a game. Rookie Mark Socoby is adding 6.9 points per game. ?Maine is shooting 41.9 percent from the floor, while its opponents are connecting 42.1 percent of the time. The Black Bears are grabbing 34.3 rebounds per game, while their opponents are pulling down 36.6 per contest. RUFUS HARRIS' NUMBER 20 RETIRED: Maine retired Rufus Harris' number 20 on Wednesday, February 14 prior to its game against Vermont. Harris is Maine's all-time leading scorer with 2,206 career points. He was the ECAC North Co-Player of the Year in 1980. Harris was a three-time NABC District I selection and currently holds 10 UMaine records. He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. REED AMONG ALL-TIME SCORING LEADERS: Kevin Reed ranks fourth on Maine's all-time scoring list. He has 1,539 career points in 115 career games. He is two points shy of tying Francois Bouchard (1989-94) for third place on the all-time scoring list. He became the seventh player in Maine history to score 1,500 points when he drained a three-point field goal on Wed., Feb. 7 against Albany. REED DRAINS 300TH TREY: Kevin Reed hit his 300th career three-point field goal on Wednesday, Feb. 14 against Vermont. He currently has 301 in his career. WINNING ON THE ROAD: Maine is 7-7 on the road this season, including 4-3 in America East road games. That is a dramatic improvement over a year ago when Maine finished the season 3-11 on the road. STEALING THE BALL: Sheets and Reed combined to record 11 of Maine's 12 steals on Wednesday night against Vermont. Sheets had six steals The six steals for Sheets was a career-high. Reed's five steals tied his season-high.
