Reed, Campbell Earn America East Honors

March 4, 2005

VESTAL, N.Y.--University of Maine men's basketball player Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) was named to the America East Second Team, while Joe Campbell (Bangor, Maine) received Third Team honors. The awards were announced at the 2005 America East Tournament banquet on Friday morning at the Binghamton University Union. Vermont's Taylor Coppenrath became just the second player in America East history to win the Kevin Robertson Player of the Year Award three times. Coppenrath was a unanimous selection. Northeastern freshman Shawn James was named both the America East Rookie of the Year and the America East Defensive Player of the Year. Northeastern's Ron Everhart was named Coach of the Year.

Reed, a junior, who was also named to the America East Second Team in 2004, ranks second on the team in scoring and rebounding. He is averaging 12.4 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per contest. Reed's 71 three-point field goals lead the team along with his team-high 59 steals. He has led Maine in scoring in six games this season and in rebounding in 12 games. Reed leads America East in three-point field goal percentage, steals and defensive rebounds. He is third in three-point field goals made and tied for fifth in rebounding.

Reed became the 26th player in Maine history to score 1,000 career points when he reached the plateau on January 27 against UMBC. He currently ranks 14th on the all-time scoring list with 1,143 career points. He ranks 20th all-time in career rebounds with 542 in his three-year career. He is one of just 12 players in Maine history to score 1,000 career points and pull down 500 career rebounds. Reed also set the Maine record earlier this season for career three-point field goals as he has drained 226 in his career.

Campbell, a senior, is the lone Black Bear to start all 27 games this season. He leads the Black Bears, averaging 7.1 rebounds per contest and ranks fourth with 9.0 points per game. Campbell is second on the team in both steals with 38 and blocks with 25. He grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in Maine's game against UMBC earlier this season. He has a team-high four double-doubles on the campaign. Campbell leads America East in free throw percentage, connecting 86.3 percent of the time, which is just shy of the Maine record for free throw percentage in a season. He is third in offensive rebounds and fourth in rebounding. Campbell is sixth in defensive rebounds and ninth in both blocked shots and steals.

Campbell pulled down his 500th career rebound on Feb. 6 against Binghamton and currently ranks 19th on the all-time rebounding list with 547 career boards. He ranks tied for eighth all-time with 54 career blocked shots. Campbell needs just one three-point field goal for 100 for his career.

Coppenrath was joined on the America East First Team by Catamount teammate T.J. Sorrentine. Boston University's Rashad Bell and Chaz Carr were also named to the First Team, along with Northeastern's Jose Juan Barea. Joining Reed on the Second Team were Albany players Lucious Jordan and Jamar Wilson along with Binghamton's Andre Heard and New Hampshire's Ben Sturgill. In addition to Campbell, the America East Third Team consisted on Boston University's Etienne Brower, Hartford's Aaron Cook and Northeastern's Marcus Barnes and Shawn James.

In addition to James, Albany's Brent Wilson, New Hampshire's Mike Christensen, Stony Brook's Antwan Hardy and Vermont's Josh Duell were all named to the America East All-Rookie squad.

The Black Bears return to action when they face Boston University in the America East quarterfinals on Saturday, March 5 at 8:30 PM. The game will be played at Binghamton University's Events Center.
