Men's Basketball Names Captains

April 2, 2008

ORONO, Maine- University of Maine men's basketball head coach Ted Woodward announced today that the team has elected Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.), Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) to serve as tri-captains of the basketball team for the 2008-09 season.

"Our team has decided upon these young men to lead our program as captains next season," said Woodward. "Since the postseason preparation has already begun, and our student-athletes are working hard in the weight room and on the court, we elected captains following spring break, and we are looking forward to their leadership on our team."

Socoby, a guard, started in all 30 games Maine played this season. He led the Black Bears in points per game and rebounds per game with 14.6 and 5.7, respectively. Socoby was an All-America East Third Team selection last season.

" I am extremely honored to be named a captain and leader of the team. I believe we are on the verge of accomplishing great things at Maine. I am excited and committed to help lead this team," commented Socoby.

Bernal, a guard, played in 25 games last season, and started all of them. He was third on the team in points per game with 10.8 while leading the team in assists per game with three per contest. Bernal was named to the America East All-Academic team and is a UMaine Scholar-Athlete as well.

"I really want to thank my teammates for being voted captain for the second straight year. It's an honor that a lot of student-athletes don't get to achieve. I feel fortunate and look forward to next season," said Bernal.

Owes, a guard, played in 19 games, starting in 14 of them after becoming eligible after the first semester as he was a transfer. Owes was second on the team with 12.5 points per game and also second with 2.4 assists per game.

"I'm excited that my teammates think so highly of me despite playing with them for only half a season. I'll take this role very seriously and do my best in helping to lead this team in America East next season," said Owes.
