Men's Basketball Signs Rashard Turner
July 25, 2005 ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine men's basketball coach Ted Woodward announced today that he has received a National Letter of Intent (NLI) from Rashard Turner. Turner will join the Black Bears in the fall of 2005 as a junior. "Rashard is a highly talented guard who has been a winner in every program he has been in," said Woodward. "He is tough, can pass, scores, defends, can play either guard position, and is an outstanding leader on the court." Turner is a 5-11 guard from Peekskill, N.Y. A 2002 graduate of Peekskill High School, Turner played last season for Monroe College in the Bronx, N.Y. He led Monroe to the Region XV NJCAA Championship. Turner averaged 14.3 points per game, 5.1 assists per game and 2.1 steals per game on a team that finished with a record of 25-8. He led the team in assists and finished second in both scoring and three-point field goals made. Turner was named an All-Region First Team selection. In 2002, Turner led Peekskill High School to the New York State Class B Title Game. He scored over 1,500 points in his career and added 450 assists, a Peekskill record. Peekskill went 79-18 during his four years. Current Los Angeles Clipper and former Duke standout Elton Brand is an alum of Peekskill High School. All National Letter of Intent signings are contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
