Men's Basketball Releases 2008-09 Schedule
Oct. 10, 2008
ORONO, Maine--University of Maine men's basketball head coach Ted Woodward announced his 2008-09 schedule today. The schedule is again one of the most difficult in the America East Conference. The Black Bears' opponents include Oklahoma, Providence, Boston College and South Alabama. Maine is the only team in America East to play a team from the ACC, BIG EAST and BIG 12. "Once again we are playing a challenging schedule that includes games with Oklahoma, Providence and Boston College," said coach Woodward. "The non-conference schedule should get us prepared for a very competitive America East schedule." Maine will begin play with the Blue/White game on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. and follow that up with a home exhibition game against Laval University on Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. The Black Bears begin the regular season on Nov. 14 at the 100 Club Classic hosted by Kennesaw St. Maine plays Northern Illinois at 4 p.m. and will play either Western Illinois or Kennesaw St. the next day. On Nov. 19, Maine travels to take on Princeton at 7 p.m. for the first time in the history of the two universities. The Black Bears then travel to BIG EAST foe Providence for a 2 p.m. contest on Nov. 22. Maine opens up its home schedule with a game against Quinnipiac on Nov. 25 before traveling to Mobile, Ala. to play in the USA Basketball Classic. Maine opens the tournament on Nov. 28 against a South Alabama team that had a seven-seed in the NCAA Tournament last March. Maine plays the next day against either the University of California-Davis or Conference USA member Tulane. In December, Maine plays host to non-league foes Colgate on Dec. 8, Harvard on Dec. 21 and Canisius on Dec. 30. Road games in December include consensus top-10 team Oklahoma on Dec. 10 and ACC power Boston College Dec. 23. Maine then opens the America East schedule at home against Binghamton on Jan. 3 before enbarking on a three-game conference road swing that includes 2008-09 America East champion UMBC on Jan. 10 and runner-up Hartford on Jan. 14.
The Black Bears return nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's team. Maine also welcomes in a very talented corps of newcomers to this year's team. Among the returnees are All-America East selection Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) and All-America East Academic Team selection Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.).
