Kevin Bourgoin enters his second season in his second stint as an assistant coach in the University of Maine football program. Again this season, Bourgoin will serve as the pass game coordinator and work closely with the wide receivers and tight ends. Bourgoin has nine years of coaching experience overall.
In 2005, Bourgoin's efforts produced a solid effort from several receivers, including Kevin McMahan and Arel Gordon, who were both named Third-Team All-Atlantic 10 selections at wideout. Both turned in career-highs for receptions and receiving yards. In all, four different Black Bears caught at least 18 passes and six had over 100 yards receiving.
Gordon tied for fifth in the conference in receptions per game with an average of 6.4, while McMahan was eighth at 5.4. Gordon's mark also tied him for 10th nationally, while McMahan followed in 35th in the NCAA rankings.
Maine's passing attack started to come together in the final two games and showed promise for the upcoming season, as the Black Bears combined to throw for 649 yards and six touchdowns.
In April 2006, McMahan became the first Black Bear taken in the NFL Draft since 1990, when the Oakland Raiders selected him with the 255th pick in the seventh round. Fellow wideout Ryan Waller agreed to terms as a rookie free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Prior to returning to Maine, Bourgoin served as the wide receivers coach at Brown. He assisted in writing the offensive playbook, breaking down video of opponents and coordinating and managing the Brown Football Camp. While at Brown, Bourgoin coached a pair of two-time All-Americans and Walter Payton Award finalists in Stephen Campbell and Chas Gessner. Campbell ranks second all-time in I-AA history with 305 career receptions, while Gessner is fourth with 292. Campbell also owns the I-AA record for receptions in a single season with 120. He played briefly for the Buffalo Bills, while Gessner is now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after earning a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New England Patriots in 2003. Gessner is the I-AA record holder for receptions in a single game with 24.
Prior to Brown, Bourgoin served as the wide receivers coach at Maine from 1998-2000. He assisted in developing weekly scouting reports and analyzing video on upcoming opponents. He helped mentor receivers Drew O'Connor, Phil McGeoghan and Dwayne Wilmot, who all rank in the top 10 in school history for receptions and yards in a career.
Bourgoin also served as a wide receivers coach at Colby College and assisted as the recruiting coordinator for the team. While at Colby, he also served as the assistant track & field coach.
As a player, Bourgoin was a four-year starter at wide receiver for Massachusetts from 1992-95.
He received his B.S. in sports management from UMass in 1996. Bourgoin resides in Levant.
