Ron Whitcomb Named Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year
Jan. 23, 2007 ORONO, Maine - University of Maine senior quarterback Ron Whitcomb (East Rochester, N.Y.) was named the 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Student-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. The award was voted on by the sports information directors of the conference's 12 schools. Whitcomb served as one of three senior captains for the Black Bears in 2006. He helped lead Maine to a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the A-10. It marked Maine's first winning season since the 2003 campaign, while the conference record was good enough for second place in the league's North Division. Maine finished the 2006 regular season ranked No. 24 in The Sports Network I-AA Top 25 Poll. He ended his collegiate career as the school-record holder in completions (755), attempts (1,276), passing touchdowns (68) and total offense (8,801). Whitcomb also became just the second quarterback in school history to lead the team in passing all four years of his career. Whitcomb has already earned his bachelor's degree in education and is currently enrolled in graduate school at Maine. He maintains a 3.67 grade point average as a graduate student in education administration. Elevn other Black Bears joined Whitcomb as honorees on the 2006 Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. The list included redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Brusko (communications major), sophomore offensive lineman Ryan Canary (education), junior offensive lineman Shawn Demaray (kinesiology & physical education), senior defensive back Alex Goyins (journalism), senior fullback Kenneth Henry (sociology), senior offensive lineman Justin Roberts (business), sophomore defensive back Jonathan Calderon (kinesiology & physical education), junior defensive lineman Joshua Caldwell (biology), sophomore defensive lineman Jonathan Pirruccello (biology), senior defensive back Joe Vanidestine (business) and junior linebacker John Wormuth (kinesiology & physical education).
To be eligible for the academic team, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better. The student-athlete must also be a starter or key reserve. First-year freshmen are ineligible to make the team.
