Maine Releases 2005 Football Schedule

March 30, 2005

The University of Maine's 2005 football schedule includes a trip to traditional football power Nebraska to open the season and three games against schools that reached the I-AA quarterfinals last season, including National Champion James Madison.

The Black Bears will open the 2005 season with a game at Division I-A Nebraska. Nebraska is coming off a 5-6 season (3-5 in the Big 12) in the first year under coach Bill Callahan. The 2004 season saw the Huskers end a 36-year bowl streak. Nebraska has won five National Championships - 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995 and 1997. Maine won their I-A game last year against Mississippi State.

The home opener for Maine will take place on September 10 against William Penn from the NAIA. The Atlantic-10 schedule begins the following week as the Black Bears host Richmond on September 17.

After a bye week on September 24, Maine will host Albany on October 1. The Great Danes, a member of the Northeast Conference, won the conference title in 2002 and 2003. The Black Bears will face defending NCAA I-AA National Champion James Madison on October 8 in Harrisonburg. The road schedule continues on October 15 at Hofstra. On October 22, Maine will host Massachusetts as part of Homecoming weekend. Delaware, who advanced to the I-AA quarterfinals last season, will travel to Orono on October 29.

Following a trip to Boston on November 5 to face Northeastern, Maine will host their final regular season home game on November 12 against Rhode Island. The Black Bears will wrap-up the 2005 regular season on November 19 at the University of New Hampshire in the "Battle for the Brice-Cowell Musket." New Hampshire was 10-3 last season and won the Atlantic 10 North Division title.

"We are very excited about our 2005 football schedule which begins with the ultimate challenge for our program, a trip to Nebraska to play the Cornhuskers," said Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove. "Having three home dates early provides us a great opportunity to start strong as we compete for the Atlantic 10 Championship."

The Black Bears will begin spring practice on Friday, April 1, with the annual Spring Scrimmage scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 on Morse Field at Alfond Stadium.
