Football Wraps Up First Weekend of Spring Practice
April 10, 2006 ORONO, Maine - In preparation for the 2006 season, the University of Maine football team completed its first full weekend of spring practice on Sunday. The Black Bears took part in a pair of two-and-a-half hour practices at Alfond Stadium during the weekend, as the tempo of practice and enthusiasm shown by the players pleased head coach Jack Cosgrove. "We showed the guys what we wanted to accomplish in practice and taught some schemes," said Cosgrove, who will be entering his 14th season as head coach on the Black Bear sidelines this fall. "The practices had a good tempo and our upperclassmen did a good job of setting the tone. It was good first step to what we want to accomplish this spring." The first weekend of practice featured several drills between the offense and defense, but no hitting took place as the team practiced in just helmets. It was designed for the players to get back out on the field and work on techniques and fundamentals. The hitting and intensity will pick throughout the course of the second week, which will culminate on Saturday morning at Alfond Stadium with the team's first intra-squad scrimmage. The scrimmage, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 8:45-11:15 a.m. "It was good to get back out on the field this past weekend," Cosgrove added. "Our staff is anxious for this week to begin, because we'll get to see the guys perform in game-like situations. The scrimmage should be fun to watch. I think you will start to see some of the upperclassmen stepping up and assuming more of a leadership role this next week." Maine has 13 practices remaining during the spring practice period. Each team is allowed 15 practices every spring. The 15th and final practice of the spring season will be held on Saturday, May 6, as the Black Bears take part in the Second Annual Jeff Cole Memorial Scrimmage. Kickoff for the scrimmage has been set for 9 a.m., and admission is free. THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE SCHEDULE AND TIMES Wednesday, April 12 ... 3:45-6:15 p.m. (Alfond Stadium) Friday, April 14 ... 3:45-6:15 p.m. (Alfond Stadium)
