Andrew Downey Spring Blog - Week #4 - April 16
April 16, 2008
Spring practice has officially begun for the Maine Black Bears! It felt great to start spring practice last Thursday (April 10), even though we began bright and early at 5:45 a.m. It felt great to get on the football field for the first time in about five months. That's a long time to wait between putting on the helmet and hitting the field. The first two practices were just helmets which the guys don't really like due to the lack of contact, but on Saturday we went in uppers and guys were getting after it. The fierce competition that I have seen between the offense and the defense is the best I have seen during spring ball since I have been here. As a team, we know that the competition between the O and D helps the team as a whole and everyday that we compete we are getting that much better. A few scuffles broke out after some"game-like" hits but that's a part of football and really hypes up the rest of practice. We're all competitors and we're always looking to make a play when we are on the field. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us. The coaches don't care for it, but as long as things like that dont happen on Saturdays they generally keep their cool. I feel like we have made strides as a team in the first few practices and that is a good sign going into the rest of spring ball and the summer.
