![]() Football Spring Practice Continues
April 17, 2005 ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine football team continued spring drills on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium. Under sunny skies and in full pads, the Black Bears scrimmaged for 50 plays. In the two-hour and twenty minute practice, the first offense and first defense took three series while the second offense and second defense had two series. "It was a great day to be out here in full pads for a scrimmage," said head coach Jack Cosgrove. "I thought we were physical, we executed for the most part real well. In terms of the offense we saw some emerging playmakers for us at the skill positions. We had some big plays by the wide receivers and the running backs. Chris Legree is really starting to get a hang of the shotgun offense we are running. Defensively I thought we played real physical and were opportunistic getting three turnovers, two of them in the redzone. The positives for one side are negatives for the other side. I am pleased with the progress we are making. We have six more practices, three next week and three the week after, which will allow us to get better. Scrimmages on both Saturdays will give us a good chance to see our progress." On the first drive for the first offense, Ron Whitcomb (East Rochester, N.Y.) was intercepted by Manauris Arias (Union City, N.J.). Chris Legree (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was under center for the second offense and took off on a 15-yard scramble for a first down. Keien Williams (Eden, N.Y.) had a twelve yard run, but the offense's progress was stopped by Anthony Cotrone (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was intercepted by Garland Webb (Boston, Mass.). Legree was able to end the series with a first down pass to Manzi Pierre (Queens, N.Y.). Whitcomb completed a 35-yard pass to Kevin McMahan (Rochester, N.Y.) on the first offense's second series of plays. Matthew King (Stoughton, Mass.) was able to bat a pass down at the line of scrimmage, but the offense scored several plays later when Whitcomb found tight end Mike Moran (Lancaster, N.Y.) in the endzone. With the second offense on the field, Teron Allen (Clairton, Pa.) had a twelve yard run on third down to keep the drive moving. Legree scored a touchdown on a 38 yard run. The rest of the series was keyed by the defense, with a sack by Josh Caldwell (Brewer, Maine) and a fumble recovery by Matthew Keahon (Onagh, Ga.). In the final series for the first offense, Jermaine Walker (Teaneck, N.J.) had two tackles for loss in the redzone.
