Football Prepares For Saturday Scrimmage

April 20, 2005

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine football team continued spring drills on Wednesday afternoon at Alfond Stadium in preparation for the Jeff Cole Scrimmage on Saturday at 4:30 pm. The full pads practice began under gray skies with strong wind and ended two-hours later. The team ran a 30-play scrimmage to conclude practice.

"It was a defensive day and they did a real nice job with the plays that we had," said head coach Jack Cosgrove. "The defense got a turnover, had three-straight three and outs versus the one offense and it was real good to see that. The defense play with some emotion and made some plays. On Friday we will be just in helmets to get ready for Saturday. On Saturday we are going to do as much scrimmaging as we can. Some positions are banged up so we have to be smart with what we can give guys because we don't want to have any set-backs for the fall. As you get towards the close of spring you like to stay as healthy as you can. Hopefully we have gotten enough reps at this point to be able to evaluate guys and the next step is to work towards finalizing the depth chart."

Several of the highlights from the thirty plays that were run included a long run by Teron Allen (Clairton, Pa.) and a good strong run up the middle by Montell Owens (Eden, N.Y.). But the defense carried the day, as plays by Matthew Keahon (Onagh, Ga.) to break-up a pass in the endzone and a tackle for loss by Manauris Arias (Union City, N.J.) were highlights for the Black Hole defense.

One position that will see plenty of changes from last season is the defensive line. Mike DeVito (Wellfleet, Mass.) is the only player returning to the line who started all eleven games last season. Matthew King (Stoughton, Mass.) started nine games at defensive end, while Bryan Grier (Bloomfield, Conn.) started the last two games of the season at tackle as a true freshman. Senior Kurt Bulwith (Bayonne, N.J.) had eleven tackles in eleven games last season, while Bruno Dorismond (New Canaan, Conn.) had eight tackles in seven games. Also returning from last season are Patrick McCrossan (Sparta, N.J.) and Reginald Paramoure (Hamilton, N.J.). Matthew Keahon (Ohagh, Ga.) and Robert Sampson (Portland, Maine) redshirted last season as freshmen.

The team has made some changes to the practice schedule for the remainder of the spring practices. The revised schedule is as follows:

Friday, April 22 3:50 p.m.

Saturday, April 23 4:30 p.m. Jeff Cole Spring Scrimmage

Wednesday, April 27 3:50 p.m.

Friday, April 29 3:50 p.m.

Saturday, April 30 9:25 a.m. Scrimmage, Black Bear Youth Experience
