April 22, 2007

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine football squad took part in its first full-squad scrimmage on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium in Orono. Both the offense and defense turned in several impressive plays as the Black Bears are now at their midway point of the 2007 spring season.

On the offensive side, a pair of redshirt freshman turned in several spectacular plays, including wide receiver Tyrell Jones and running back Jermaine Henderson. Jones had a pair of spectacular catches, including a 41-yarder down the middle of the field from quarterback and fellow redshirt freshman Adam Farkes. That play took the offense down to the defense's three-yard line and led to the offense's lone touchdown of the day. The offense scored on a third-and-goal from the one as junior fullback Wellington Talkpa caught a Farkes deflected pass in the back of the endzone. Jones' other impressive grab came on the previous possession when he laid out for a diving eight-yard reception which was good enough for a first down.

Henderson broke several physical runs and screen passes. On the offense's second possession of the scrimmage, Henderson took a short screen pass from sophomore quarterback Michael Brusko and raced up field nine yards for a first down. Maine went back to Henderson on the very next play and he responded by ripping off a 13-yard run in which he broke two tackles. Following the scrimmage, the team took part in a drill to work on game management in overtime. Again, Henderson showed his physical style of running. On a fourth-and-17 from the defense's 32-yard line, Henderson took another screen pass from Brusko and busted through another pair of tackles to get down to the 14 for an 18-yard pickup. Henderson's number was called again on the next play and he answered with a 10-yard run to set up first-and-goal at the defense's four-yard line.

Defensively, the "Black Hole" limited the offense to 10 points, including a Devin McNeill field goal in the overtime session. Sophomore linebacker Jordan Stevens made his presence felt with three tackles behind the line of scrimmage and a pass breakup. Fellow linebacker Sean Wasson also got into the offensive backfield and made two drops for minus yardage. Defensive backs Troy Harris, Jonathan Calderon, Lamir Whetstone and linebacker John Wormuth also each made a tackle for loss. Defensive end Jovan Belcher forced a fumble deep in the offense's territory, while Lionel Nixon had a pair of pass breakups.

Maine returns to practice on Tuesday from 6-8 a.m., at Alfond Stadium. The Black Bears will conclude spring practice in two weeks with a weekend tribute to former assistant coach Jeff Cole. The Third Annual Jeff Cole Memorial Blood Drive will be held on Thursday, May 3, from 2-7 p.m., in Dexter Lounge at Alfond Arena. The weekend will continue on Saturday, May 5, when the Black Bears conclude spring ball with the Third Annual Jeff Cole Memorial Scrimmage at 10 a.m., at Alfond Stadium. The scrimmage is open to the public and FREE to attend.
