Kevin Cahill Joins Football Coaching Staff
April 30, 2008
ORONO, Maine - University of Maine head football coach Jack Cosgrove announced on Wednesday that Kevin Cahill has joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach in charge of running backs. Cahill comes to Orono with seven years of coaching experience. "We are very excited to add Kevin Cahill to our coaching staff," Cosgrove said. "He's an experienced coach who has worked with several coaches that have ties to Maine, including Matt Griffin, Rich Nagy and Dwayne Wilmot. They all speak highly of him and I'm glad that he will be working with our running backs." Cahill comes to Maine after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Murray State. He coached the wide receivers, organized recruiting areas for the staff, organized coaching clinics and assisted with the offensive pass game. In 2007, Cahill was part of an offensive staff which helped the Racers finish as the number one offene in the Ohio Valley Conference. Cahill mentored a pair of players who garnered All-OVC honors, including two-time selection Rod Harper (second-team in both 2006 and 2007) and DeAngelo Nelson (first-team honoree in 2007). Prior to Murray State, Cahill spent two seasons at Tennessee-Martin where he also coached the receivers. He coached Taurean Stephens in 2004, as the receiver earned Second-Team All-OVC honors. Cahill was part of a coaching staff in 2005, which helped lead UT-Martin to its first winning season in 13 years.
Cahill graduated from Springfield College in 2001 with his bachelor's in physical education. Following graduation, Cahill spent the 2001 season as an assistant football coach at Maine Maritime Academy, where he coached the quarterbacks, fullbacks, halfbacks and wide receivers. He returned to Springfield as a graduate assistant coach for the 2002 and 2003 seasons, and earned a master's in athletic administration from the school in 2004.
In addition to Cahill, Cosgrove announced that two other coaches have joined the staff, including defensive assistant Tom McEntire and offensive assistant Dennis Dottin-Carter. McEntire comes to Maine from Thiel College in Pennsylvania. Dottin-Carter was a standout defensive lineman for the Black Bears from 2000-03 and served as a team captain in 2003. He was a two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection, including earning first-team honors in 2002. Maine football is in its final week of spring practice. The Black Bears will go through two more practices, including Thursday and Friday, both from 5:45-8 a.m., at Alfond Stadium. The Black Bears return 34 lettermen for the 2008 season, which opens on Aug. 30 when they travel to face Big Ten-foe Iowa at Kinnick Stadium.
