Football Concludes Spring Practice with Weekend Full of Festivities

May 2, 2006

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine football team will conclude its 2006 spring practice schedule this weekend with a number of festivities for fans, alumni, students and the community. The weekend will begin on Thursday with the Jeff Cole Blood Drive, which will last from 2-7 p.m. in Dexter Lounge at Alfond Arena.

The Black Bear football squad will also honor its former special teams coach on Saturday with the Second Annual Jeff Cole Scrimmage. The scrimmage, which brings an end to the spring season, will kick off at 9 a.m. at Alfond Stadium. Cole served as an assistant coach at Maine for six seasons before passing away on Oct. 18, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. The team has honored Cole the last two seasons and will do so during the 2006 campaign by wearing the "One Direction" decals on the front of their helmets. The scrimmage is open to the public and admission is free.

Another highlight of the weekend will be the annual Spring Youth Day on Friday at Alfond Stadium. The clinic will begin at 6:15 p.m., following the conclusion of Maine's practice at 5 p.m. Youth in eighth grade and under are invited to join the football team for this fun-filled event.

Events that will take place during the clinic include:

**A skills clinic hosted by Black Bear coaches and players, which will be filled with expert instruction and tips on how to improve your game.

**All participants will enter the field just like the Black Bears on game day through the Bear Head tunnel and a sea of Black Bear players.

**An exclusive behind the scenes tour of the press box at Alfond Stadium and all other football facilities with coaches and players.

The always popular photo and autograph session with players and coaches will be held following the event.

All participants will receive a FREE ticket to Saturday's baseball game (1 p.m.), when the Black Bears battle the Great Danes of Albany. Check-in/registration begins at 5 p.m., as the football team concludes practice. For a more detailed schedule of events or to register, please contact the athletic marketing office at (207) 581-1086. Parents and youth are encouraged to attend the team's practice prior to the clinic to cheer on their favorite players.
