Guy Perron enters his second season on the bench for the men's ice hockey program . Perron was named the Associate Head Coach by Tim Whitehead on July 28, 2006. Perron is the primary recruiter for the Black Bears, who is in his fifth season overall on the coaching staff. Prior to joining the men's team, he was the head coach of the women's ice hockey program at Maine for two successful seasons.
In two seasons, he posted a 31-24-9 record as head coach of the women's team. The team set a school record for wins in a season as they went 17-9-6 in 2005-06. In his first season he led the Black Bears to a 14-15-3 record. He coached several players that received Hockey East All-Star honors, and his team led the league in Academic Honor Roll selections in 2004-05.
Perron served as a volunteer assistant with the Black Bear men's program in the 2003-04 season and was instrumental in leading Maine to a berth in the national championship game. He was also an assistant coach at Maine in 1991-92 and 1994-95 for Coach Shawn Walsh.
Perron was a four-year letterwinner with the Black Bears and served as captain in 1988-89 and 1989-90. He played in 136 career games, scoring 62 goals and adding 84 assists for 146 career points. He left Maine ranked ninth on both the school's career goals and career assists lists and seventh in career points. In his first season, Perron helped lead the Black Bears to their first of four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to his return to Maine, Perron coached the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League where he was General Manager and Head Coach from 1997 through 2003. He compiled a record of 167-150-19 with the Freeze, while leading them to the playoffs in each of his six seasons, and finishing third in the country (2001) behind the bench. Several member of the Freeze were drafted by NHL teams, including goalies Craig Henderson (Chicago) and Jason Bacashiua (Dallas) and forward George Parros (Kings).
Before coaching the Chicago Freeze, Perron served as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College from 1995 through 1997. He also coached at Bangor High School from 1992-1994. In his rookie season, he was named Class A Coach of the Year after leading the Rams to the state playoffs. After graduation from Maine, Perron played professionally in Sweden at the Division I level before returning to the United States to accept a position at Maine.
Perron is a 1990 graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in education. He also has earned a masters in education administration from the University of Maine. Perron and his wife, Renee, reside in Bangor with their daughter Grace and sons Jack and Marc Andre.
