Maine Skates to 6-6 Tie with New Brunswick

FREDERICTON, New Brunswick -The University of Maine men's ice hockey team skated to a 6-6 tie with New Brunswick on Saturday night in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Theo Andersson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Keif Orsini (Montreal, Quebec) each had a pair of goals for the Black Bears.

Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a delayed penalty. David deKastrozza (Toms River, N.J.) carried the puck up the right side of the ice and put a shot on New Brunswick goalie Derek Yeomans. Yeomans stopped the initial shot, but Theo Andersson was there and found the back of the net with the rebound. Brett Carriere (Ottawa, Ontario) also assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.

Maine made it a 2-0 lead at 10:17 when Robby Dee (Plymouth, Minn.), who had the puck behind the net, found Keif Orsini who was right in front of Yeomans. Orsini was easily able to beat Yeomans, giving the Black Bears the early 2-0 lead. Simon Danis-Pepin (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec) also assisted on the play.

Orsini scored his second in the span of three minutes when he tipped a Carriere shot past Yeomans at 12:53. Andersson also picked up an assist on the goal. After the goal, Yeomans was replaced by Travis Fullerton.

With a two-man advantage, New Brunswick cut into the Maine lead with just four seconds remaining in the first period. Daine Todd collected a rebound to the left of Maine goalie Scott Darling (Lemont, Ill.) and beat him, as he was positioned on the right side of the net. Jimmy Cuddihy and Jordan Clendenning also assisted on the goal. The Black Bears took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

 

 

The Varsity Reds got their second two-man advantage goal of the game just :42 second in the second period. Hunter Tremblay scored the goal from Kyle Bailey and Todd.

New Brunswick tied the game at 3-3 at 8:30 of the second period when Dustin Friesen had his shot from just inside the blueline beat Darling. Darling then made some big saves the next few minutes to keep the game tied at 3-3.

Maine grabbed the lead back at 13:38 of the second with a unbelievable power play goal. Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) had the puck below the right faceoff circle and found Chris Hahn (Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan) streaking towards the goal. Hahn received the pass and roofed the puck over Yeomans.

Maine regained a two-goal lead exactly two minutes later. Jeff Dimmen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked off a New Brunswick clearing pass just inside the blueline and fired the puck past Yeomans. Maine was not done in the second period. Theo Andersson batted a lose puck past Yeomans at 19:23, giving Maine a 6-3 lead. Carriere assisted on the goal Andersson.

Orsini had his attempt at the hat trick thwarted less than five minutes into the third period when he hit the post.

The Varsity Reds scored the next three goals, all on the power play, to tie the game at 6-6 with 2:32 remaining. New Brunswick's Kyle Bailey beat Dave Wilson (Caledon East, Ontario) at 10:42 of the third period as Varsity Reds pulled to within two goals. New Brunswick cut the Maine lead to just one goal at 16:42 when Hunter Tremblay beat Wilson at 16:42. The Varsity Reds tied the game at 17:28 with a power play goal by Bailey.

Darling made 26 saves for the Black Bears in 45:17. He was replaced by Dave Wilson who made eight saves for Maine.

After regulation, the two teams competed in a shootout which New Brunswick won 1-0.

The Black Bears open the 2008-09 regular season when they travel to Fairbanks, Alaska on Friday, Oct. 17 to play in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush. Maine will face Alaska Anchorage at 8:00 p.m. eastern time.
