Bishop, Tyler Honored By Hockey East

BOSTON, Mass. -- University of Maine junior goaltender Ben Bishop (Des Peres, Mo.) was named to the Hockey East Second Team at the 2008 Hockey East Awards banquet on Thursday night at the Royal Sonesta in Boston, Mass. Senior defenseman Bret Tyler (Maynard, Mass.) was named a Hockey East Honorable Mention selection. Bishop, who recently signed a professional contract with the Peoria Rivermen, saw action in all 34 games for the Black Bears during the 2007-08 season. He finished 13-18-3 with a 2.43 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. He was named Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week four times during the 2007-08 season and named Itech Goaltender of the Month in October. Bishop was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2006. Bishop saw action in 99 career games for the Black Bears and posted a record of 55-35-7. He finishes his career with a 2.29 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. He ranks third all-time at Maine in games played (99), second all-time in saves (2,399), fifth in wins (55), fourth in goals against average (2.29) and third in save percentage (.917). He finished with five career shutouts. An assistant captain, Tyler saw action in all 34 games for the Black Bears during the 2007-08 season. He finished second on the team in scoring with eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points. His three power play goals were second on the team. Tyler finished tied for sixth in scoring among Hockey East defensemen during the regular season. Tyler was named a semifinalist for the Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the top American-born New England college hockey player. He is the lone defenseman in Maine history to finish his career as the top scoring defensemen in each of his four years. Tyler finished his career with 143 games played. He scored 27 goals and added 62 assists for 89 career points.
