Purcell, Soares, Metcalf and Damon All Receive Hockey Honors

ORONO, Maine--Several former University of Maine men's ice hockey players were recently honored for their play this past season. Teddy Purcell of the Manchester Monarchs was named the winner of the 2007-08 Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding rookie. Josh Soares and Peter Metcalf were both named to the All-ECHL First Team, while Derek Damon was named to the ECHL Second Team. Purcell has seen action in 67 games for the Monarchs this season and is the top scoring rookie in the league with 25 goals and 58 assists for 83 points. Purcell has seen action in 10 games with the LA Kings this season and has a goal and two assists. He also earned a spot on the AHL All-Rookie Team and was named an AHL First Team All-Star. Purcell was awarded the Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month Award in November, after scoring 17 points in 12 games. He was named a starter in the 2008 AHL All-Star game where he went on to earn MVP honors after scoring a hat trick and the game-winning goal in the shootout in the Canadian team's 9-8 victory. Soares is in his first year with the Alaska Aces. He is tied for second among rookies in the league and tied for fourth overall with 81 points in 59 games. His 36 goals this season are also second among rookies. He was chosen to play in the ECHL All-Star game earlier this season. Soares has played in seven games with the AHL's Peoria Rivermen this season and has two goals and two assists for four points. Metcalf, who also plays for the Alaska Aces, was named to the All-ECHL First Team for the second year in a row. He leads all defensemen in scoring with seven goals and 53 assists for 60 points. His 28 power play assists are tops in the league among defensemen, while he is tied for first in power play points with 31 among defenseman. He was named to the All-ECHL Second Team and won the Plus Performer of the Year award during the 2005-06 campaign.
Damon was named was named to the All-ECHL Second Team. He is 10th in the lead and tops on the Florida Everblades with 24 goals and 48 assists for 72 points. He ranks fifth in the league with six game-winning goals. Damon has played in 15 games this season with the Albany River Rats and has a pair of goals and three assists for five points. -U-M- |
