2005-06 Season Recap
April 21, 2006 THE SEASON: The Black Bears won the NCAA East Regional and advanced to the Frozen Four for the third time in the last five years. The Black Bears were defeated 5-2 by Wisconsin in the semifinals. The Black Bears were 28-12-2 overall and finished 17-8-2 in conference play for a second place finish in Hockey East. Maine was ranked fourth in the final USAToday/USA Hockey Magazine poll and tenth in the final USCHO/CSTV poll. The Black Bears set a school record for penalty kill at 88.9%. RECAPPING THE BLACK BEARS: The Black Bears were led on offense by senior captain Greg Moore (Lisbon, Maine), who scored a team-high 28 goals with seventeen assists for 45 points. Senior Derek Damon (Bangor, Maine) had fifteen goals - nine on the power play - and added twenty assists for 35 points. Junior assistant captain Michel Léveillé (Levis, Quebec) scored sixteen goals and added 24 assists for 40 points. Senior Jon Jankus (Stoney Creek, Ontario) had seven goals and eleven assists on the season. Junior Josh Soares (Hamilton, Ontario) scored fifteen goals - nine on the power play - and has added a team-high 26 assists for 41 points. Sophomore Billy Ryan (Milton, Mass.) had ten goals and eighteen assists. Sophomore Keenan Hopson (Prince George, British Columbia) scored four goals and added nineteen assists. Junior Keith Johnson (Windsor, Conn.) had six goals, including the overtime game winner against UMass Lowell, and seven assists. Junior Brent Shepheard (Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia) scored three of his five goals on the season against UMass Lowell and had three assists. Sophomore Rob Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.) had six goals and nine assists for fifteen points. Junior Mike Hamilton (Victoria, British Columbia) had a goal and ten assists on the season. Senior John Hopson (Prince George, British Columbia), who transferred from Alaska-Anchorage, had ten goals and fourteen assists on the season, including three goals in the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Wes Clark (Oakville, Ontario) played in ten games and had four assists. Freshman Vince Laise (Brampton, Ontario) played in eight games. Freshmen Chris Hahn (Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan) scored the game-winning goal at Northeastern and had five points on the season, while Jeff Marshall (Kyle, Saskatchewan) played in eight games this season. The defense was anchored by senior assistant captain Steve Mullin (Cartwright, Manitoba), who has four assists and played in 101 straight games. Junior Mike Lundin (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored goals against Minnesota-Duluth, Vermont and Wisconsin and had thirteen assists on the season. Senior Travis Wight (Fannystelle, Manitoba) played in all 42 games and had two goal and nine assists. Sophomore Bret Tyler (Maynard, Mass.) had a total of seven goals and sixteen assists on the season. Sophomore Travis Ramsey (Lakewood, Calif.) has played in all 42 games this season with a goal against Providence and five assists on the season. Joining the defense this season were Simon Danis-Pepin (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec), who had four assists, Matt Duffy (Windham, Maine), who had four assists and scored three goals, and Bryan Plaszcz (Apple Valley, Minn.), who scored a goal against Alabama-Huntsville. In goal, freshman Ben Bishop (Des Peres, Mo.) started 30 games with a 21-8-2 record, posting a .907 save percentage and a 2.28 GAA. Sophomore Matt Lundin (Apple Valley, Minn.), had a 1.72 GAA and a .934 save percentage, with shutout wins over Alabama-Huntsville, Massachusetts and UMass Lowell and a 7-4-0 record. The third goalie was sophomore Ryan Shelley (Gray, Maine), who saw time in the exhibition game against the US Under 18 Team.
