Travers Evans begins his seventh season at the helm of the University of Maine men's soccer team. Over the past three seasons he has led the team to fourteen wins and an appearance in the conference tournament. Last season, Maine was 2-11-2. In 2004, Coach Evans led the Black Bears to a 5-8-3 record with wins over UMass, Manhattan College, Harvard, Hartford and Boston University, who was ranked 20th in the nation. In 2003, Evans led the Black Bears to a one of the best seasons in recent history with a record of 7-8-4, the most wins since Maine posted 10 in 1995. The Black Bears also earned a berth in the America East Tournament, the first postseason appearance for the men's soccer team since the 1994 season, and dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Harford. Evans was named 2003 America East Coach of the Year.

Evans has coached numerous standouts, including Russell Hutchison who was named a 2001 America East First Team selection and currently plays professionally. Cooper Friend was a 2003 America East First Team, 2005 America East Second Team and 2002 All-Rookie Team selection, while Daniel Florez was a 2002 America East Second Team member. Gabriel Germano was named to the 2003 America East All-Rookie Team. Jimmy Velas was selected to the 2004 America East All-Rookie Team and named America East Player of the Week twice (9/13 and 9/27). In the classroom, Jason Jacobe was honored as a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2004 and 2005. Jacobe also earned the "M" Club Dean Smith Award in February 2006, recognizing the top male scholar-athlete at the University of Maine. In addition, eleven student-athletes were named to the America East Academic Honor Roll and eleven were also honored as Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winners last year alone.

Evans was hired in the summer of 2000 as head coach, after serving as an assistant with the Black Bears for four seasons. Since his first season at the helm, Evans has guided the Black Bears to a 22-63-13 overall record. A native of Exeter, N.H., Evans competed in soccer for the New Hampshire Olympic Development Program (ODP). He went on to compete at the collegiate level for Northeastern University from 1989-1991 and Colby-Sawyer from 1992-1993. He played mostly stopper and sweeper for the Huskies before moving to center midfield for Colby-Sawyer. Prior to entering college, Evans was named an honorable mention Foster's Daily Democrat Dream Team member.

A 1997 graduate of the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, Evans has also assisted with the Summer Sports Camps at Maine. Evans is the co-founder, director of coaching, and coaches two teams for the Blackbear United Football Club, a premier club based in the Bangor area. Since 1996, Evans has served as head coach for the Maine ODP boys program. Evans received his NSCAA National Diploma for coaching in 1997.

Evans resides in Dedham with his wife, Johanna, a former University of Maine track star, and their son Riley, 4, and daughter Taylor, 2.
