Men's Soccer Falls to Rhode Island in Season-Opener
Aug. 29, 2008 DURHAM, N.H.--The University of Maine men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of Rhode Island on Friday afternoon in the UNH Nike Classic in Durham, N.H. Maine took a lead early in the first half, before seeing the Rams score two quick goals midway through the second half to earn the victory. Newcomer Nikola Bogdanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) put the Black Bears on top with a goal from 15-yards out at 17:04 of the first half. The Black Bears held the lead the remainder of the half, before seeing Rhode Island knot the score at 1-1 just under 20 minutes into the second half. Josh Sousa tied the game for Rhode Island when his header found the upper right hand corner of the goal at 63:47. The Rams took the lead at 72:35 when Gary Crooks served to the far post and Dwayne Williams redirected the ball into the net. Rhode Island finished with a slim 14-12 edge in shots. Maine keeper Nemanja Kostic (New Belgrade, Serbia) tied his career high with seven saves in the game. Chris Pennock made five stops for Rhode Island, who was picked to finish four in the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference. Bogdanovic and Maine captain Dimitri Anastasiou (Colchester, Conn.) each finished with three shots in the game, while Thomas McCole (Toronto, Ontario) chipped in with a pair. Maine used seven newcomers in the games. The Black Bears return to action when they face Adelphi in the second game of the UNH Nike Classic on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 12:30 p.m. in Durham, N.H.
