Black Bear Men's Soccer Defeats UMass 3-1

Sept. 11, 2004

AMHERST, Mass. - Maine's Jimmy Velas (Falmouth, Maine) scored his first two career goals to lift the Black Bears to their first win of the season, 3-1, at UMass' Rudd Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

The Black Bear's found themselves down 1-0 when UMass freshman Matty Lemire scored off a pass from sophomore Michael Donnelly with 4:42 left in the first half. Lemire beat Maine goalkeeper Chad Mongeon to the lower left side of the goal on a shot from the top of the box. Maine came to life in the second half when freshman Velas tied the game at the 53:59 mark off a pass from senior Justin Stockford (Foster, Rhode Island). Velas then put Maine up for good with his second goal of the game after senior captain Matt Bernal (Wallkill, New York) played him behind the Minuteman defense on a perfect through ball. Velas scored both goals in the span of 5:20 early in the second half.

Maine added an insurance goal with 10:15 left in the game as Joe Corey (Winslow, Maine) scored his first career goal off an assist from Gabriel Germano (Sainte Foy, Quebec) as he volleyed a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal.

Maine improved to 1-1-1 while the Minutemen fell to 0-3 overall. In goal, junior Chad Mungeon (Essex Junction, Vermont) had four saves for the Black Bears and UMass' Colin Burn's made four saves.

The Black Bear's play their next two games on the road at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Connecticut on Friday, September 17th at 3:30pm and at Manhattan, New York on Sunday, September 19th at 10:00am.
