Reed, McCole Lead Men's Soccer Past LIU 2-1

BROOKLYN, N.Y.-- The University of Maine men's soccer team defeated Long Island University 2-1 on Friday afternoon in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Black Bears got goals from Philip Reed (Gorham, Maine) and Thomas McCole (Toronto, Ontario) as they improved to 2-3 on the season. Maine opened the scoring at 24:27. With the ball in the box, Reed headed it into the corner of the net, beating LIU keeper Adam Janssen for his first goal of the season. Corey Sinclair (Richland, Wash.) assisted on the goal for the Black Bears. Maine took the 1-0 lead into intermission. The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when McCole beat Janssen after a cross from the right at 48:57. For McCole, it was his first goal of the season. Alex Rickett (Northville, Ontario) and Nikola Bogdanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) each assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning goal. LIU pulled to within one goal at 66:10 when Jukka Lehto beat Maine keeper Alex Pilitsis (Brunswick, Maine). Frank Alesci assisted on the goal for the Blackbirds. Pilitsis made three saves in goal for the Black Bears. He improves to 1-2 on the season. Adam Janssen stopped four shots in goal for LIU in 55:10. Michael Wood made one save in 34:50. Maine returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 14 when they play Iona in Brooklyn, N.Y. -U-M-
