Men's Soccer Finishes Second in LIU Soccer Classic

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The University of Maine men's soccer team finished second in the Courtyard By Marriott LaGuardia LIU Soccer Classic, falling to Iona 2-1 in the championship game on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Black Bears fall to 2-4-0 on the season, while Iona improves to 3-2-0.

After a scoreless first half, Maine opened the scoring at 56:23. Adam Loiacono (Cranston, R.I) headed the ball into the left corner of the net, beating Iona keeper Nils Binstock. Nikola Bogdanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) assisted on the goal which began on a corner kick. For Loiacono, a rookie, it was his first collegiate goal.

Iona tied the game at 79:20 when Giovanni Destasio beat Maine keeper Nemanja Kostic (New Belgrade, Serbia) with a ball that was headed into the right side of the goal. Rob Hernandez-Raaen assisted on the game-tying goal.

Iona broke the tie at 86:28 when Ben Williams scored on a penalty kick, giving the Gaels a 2-1 lead with less than four minutes to play in the game.

Kostic falls to 1-2-0 on the season for the Black Bears. Ninstock made three saves for Iona in goal.

Dimitri Anastasiou (Colchester, Conn.) and Bogdanovic each had three shots for the Black Bears, who outshot Iona 13-10.

After the game, an All-Tournament team was selected and the Black Bears placed three on the squad. Marc Goulet (Plainville, Conn.), Daniel Tannous (Thornhill, Ontario) and Bogdanovic were each selected to the All-Tournament Team. It is the second time this season that Goulet and Tannous have been named to an All-Tournament Team. They were both selected to the UNH Nike Classic All-Tournament Team earlier this season.

 

 

After opening the season with six straight games on the road, the Black Bears play their home-opener when they host Northeastern on Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field in Orono.
