Men's Soccer Falls 5-1 At Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The University of Maine men's soccer team was defeated 5-1 on Friday night at the Cal Poly sports complex. Maine took the lead with a goal by Jason Jacobe, but the Mustangs scored five straight goals to secure the win. The Black Bears are 0-7 on the season, while Cal Poly improved to 2-3-2.

After a scoreless first period, the Black Bears opened the scoring 2:45 into the second half when Cooper Friend (Ellsworth, Maine) crossed the ball and Jason Jacobe (Windham, Maine) put it over the head of the Cal Poly goalie from 20 yard out. Cal Poly's game tying goal came in 67th minute when Todd Combs scored his first goal of the season when put a header into the net off a left cross from Julain Alvarez.

The Mustangs go-ahead goal was scored by sophomore Barrett Park off the bench for his third goal of the year. Parks goal came on a break away after a pass from Dominic Papa. Combs added his second goal of the night when Ben Hancock placed a cross in front of the net for Combs to knock home (76th minute).

Anton Peterlin scored his goal on a unassisted free kick from 35-yeards out. Ben Hancock capped off the Mustang night with a ball off a right cross by Andrew Cruz.

Maine was outshot 20 to three in the game, while Cal Poly had a ten to two advantage on corner kicks. Cal Poly goalie Eric Branagan-Franco had two saves in the win, while Maine's Giacomo Brunino (Concord, Ontario) had seven saves on the night.

The Black Bears continue the West Coast trip with a game against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, before returning home September 23 for the start of America East play against Binghamton. For more information on Maine athletics, visit www.GoBlackBears.com.
