Men's Soccer Ties Northeastern 0-0 in Double Overtime

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's soccer team battled to a hard-fought 0-0 double overtime tie with Northeastern on Saturday afternoon in the home-opener for the Black Bears. It is the first tie of the season for the Black Bears who move to 2-4-1 on the campaign. Northeastern, who tied 25th-ranked Providence 0-0 on Monday, moves to 1-2-3 on the season.

Both teams had chances to win the game. Northeastern had a shot by Lewis Ehrlich in the box with just five minutes to play in the first half, but Maine's Nemanja Kostic (New Belgrade, Serbia) made and outstanding save to keep the game scoreless. Northeastern had an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half.

Maine outshot Northeastern 7-6 in the second half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Maine's best chance came in overtime, when Philip Reed (Gorham, Maine) headed the ball just over the cross bar.

Thomas McCole (Toronto, Ontario) led Maine with four shots. Alexander Volk had five shots for Northeastern.

Kostic tied his career high with seven saves. He earned his second shutout of the season and third of his career. He moves to 1-2-1 on the season. Scott Partridge also made seven saves for the Huskies. He moves to 1-2-3 on the season.

The Black Bears continue their home stand when they host Bryant on Friday, Sept. 26. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Alumni Field in Orono.
