Harvard Blanks Maine, 2-0

Sept. 21, 2005

Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. (September 21, 2005)--Harvard topped visiting Maine by a score of 2-0 in a non-conference game at Ohiri Field Wednesday afternoon. Maine slips to 2-5-0 with the loss while Harvard improves to 2-1-1 overall.

Harvard struck quickly when Peter Glenmullen sent a long pass into a stiff wind to a charging Charles Altchek who outran the Black Bears' defense and tucked home a shot to the right corner of senior goalkeeper Chad Mongeon (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex) just 2:29 into the action. Last year, Maine scored the opening goal in 36 seconds on route to a 2-1 win.

The Crimson lived dangerously from that point on however, and called on goalkeeper Ryan Johnson to make four sprawling stops to keep Maine at bay and take the one goal lead into the half. On a corner kick, junior back Jason Jacobe (Windham, Maine/Windham) beat the Harvard goalkeeper on a powerful header that hit the crossbar then was cleared out. Later in the half, freshman Kyle Pacheco (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy) stole the ball from a Harvard defender and raced to goal. Johnson came flying out of the penalty area and saved Pachecho's shot with his hands to deny Pacheco his second goal of the season.

The Black Bears dominated play in the second half and hit the post two more times. Senior forward Adam Chenault (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) hit a half-volley that Johnson tipped and then careened off the crossbar. Four minutes later, Pacheco took an early shot in traffic that beat Johnson and hit the post but was cleared away for a corner.

Harvard finally got some breathing room as a result of a foul at the 75:34 mark. Anthony Tornaritis caught Maine's defense out of position on a quick re-start and began a give-and-go effort to his twin brother Nicholas, ending in a left-footed strike to the lower corner for the 2-0 lead.

Mongeon made six saves in the loss with Harvard goalkeeper Ryan Johnson recording 10 saves to earn the shutout.

Maine will open conference play on Saturday, September 24th at Boston University. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
