Men's Soccer Falls to Rhode Island 4-1

KINGSTON, R.I.-- The University of Maine men's soccer team fell to Rhode Island 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in Kingston, R.I. The Black Bears fall to 2-7 on the season, while the Rams improve to 2-6 on the campaign.

Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead 6:07 into the game. Kedan Crosby scored off a header from six yards which beat Maine keeper Nemanja Kostic (New Belgrade, Serbia) to the top left corner. Danleigh Borman made the cross to pick up the assist on the goal.

The Rams added to their lead at 17:16 when Lukasz Tumica found the back left corner of the goal. Geoffrey Cameron assisted on the goal.

Maine cut the deficit to just one goal at 26:40. Thomas McCole (Toronto, Ontario) scored off a header from Dan Eggert (Allegany, N.Y.) and Pat Halligan (Falmouth, Maine). For McCole, it was his second goal of the season.

The Rams scored less than five minutes into the second half when Tumicz got his second goal of the game and fifth of the season off a cross from Crosby. Greg Balicki rounded out the scoring for the Rams when he scored off a free kick at 61:42.

Rhode Island outshot Maine 23-7 in the game. The Rams had an 8-4 edge in penalty kicks.

Halligan led Maine with three shots, while Alex Rickett (Northville, Mich.) added two shots.

Maine keeper Nemanja Kostic made seven saves in goal for the Black Bears. He falls to 2-6 on the season. Chris Pennock made two saves for the Rams.

The game was a homecoming for Maine head coach Pat Laughlin who served as an assistant coach at Rhode Island during the 2006 season.

Maine returns to action on Saturday, October 6 when it hosts New Hampshire in the first America East Conference game of the season at 2 p.m.
