Black Bears Fall to UMBC, 2-1
Oct. 7, 2006 ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's soccer team scored the tying goal with just 25 seconds remaining in the game to bring the match into extra minutes. It was who UMBC scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime to lift the Retrievers past the Black Bears, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The win is UMBC's first conference win of the season, giving them a 1-2-2 America East record, 4-7-3 overall. Maine falls to 0-13-0 on the season, 0-4-0 in conference action. The Retrievers got on the board first with a goal by Kevin Mezzadra, David Feazell shot a corner kick that crossed in front of the to Mezzadra who was waiting next to the post. The goal was scored in the 25 minute of play. The Black Bears had limited scoring opportunties, but the one shot on goal they had was successful. Sophomore Martin John (Ottawa, Ontario) earned his first goal on the season with the goal. Cooper Friend (Ellsworth, Maine) centered to John on a corner kick with just 25 seconds remaining in regulation time. The goal ended a three game scoring drought for the Black Bears. In overtime, Maine freshmen Marc Goulet (Plainville, Conn.) and Kenny Caceros (Ottawa, Ontario) both had shots that hit the crossbar. UMBC's Mezzadra earned his second goal of the game with the game-winner 34 seconds into the second overtime. This was the first time the Black Bears have gone into extra minutes this season.
