Black Bears Fall to Albany, 2-1

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's soccer team scored the tying goal with a penalty kick in the 54th minute, but Albany notched a goal to give them the lead and the victory late in the game on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss the Black Bears fall to 0-14-0 overall, 0-5-0 in the conference. Albany improves to 6-6-2 overall, 4-2-0 in America East. The Great Danes got on the board first with a goal from Kurt Ruhe Lischke in the 25th minute. The ball was passed up and across the field by Gaby Seguin-Gauthier. Black Bear senior Cooper Friend (Ellsworth, Maine) recorded the first penalty kick of his career to tie the game, 1-1. The penalty kick was called when Maine was fouled while attempting to score from inside the box. There were seven yellow cards give out during the game, including five in ten minutes. The Great Danes took the lead with 2:28 remaining in the game with a goal from Brian Gordon. The goal was assisted by Don Johnson. The game-winning goal was Gordon's second of the season. In his first game of the season, due to an injury, Ben Piotrowski (Colchester, VT) recorded five saves. Albany goalkeeper, Steward Ceus earned three saves and the victory. Both Maine and Albany earned team saves. The Black Bears recorded two, including a diving one by senior Jason Jacobe (Gorham, Maine) in the seventh minute to keep the game scoreless. The Black Bears travel to Vermont to play the Catamounts on Saturday, October 14 at 1pm. Continuing on the road, Maine will face Stony Brook on Wednesday, October 18 at 7 pm.
