No. 16 Vermont Defeats Men's Soccer 1-0

Oct. 15, 2005

Box Score

Hampden, Maine - The No. 18 Vermont men's soccer team struck early in the first half on Saturday afternoon and held on to give the University of Maine men's soccer team a 1-0 loss at Hampden Academy. The Catamounts scored against the run of play in the 31st minute of action and their defense held strong as Vermont win their tenth game of the season.

Maine fell to 2-8-2 overall and 0-3-2 in the America East with the loss, while Vermont improves to 10-4-1 overall, 3-2-0 in the America East.

The Catamounts went into intermission with the 1-0 lead following Jordan Crasilneck's shot that skipped just inside the left post to beat Maine keeper Chad Mongeon (Essex Junction, Vermont). The play was set-up after a Maine and Vermont player battled for the ball about 30 yards out, with the deflection going to Crasilneck who found time and space to hit a shot just outside of the 18-yard box.

"The guys gave a great effort and I'm proud of their performance. They played hard, had some chances, and unfortunately, that's the game of soccer." said head coach Travers Evans.

The Black Bears had several chances and dominated both halves of play. Maine out shot Vermont in each half finishing the game with a 17 to 9 advantage. Catamount goalkeeper Tom Critz finished the game with seven saves to Mongeon's three.

Maine's best chance in the second half went just high of the intended mark as senior Adam Chenault (Maineville, Ohio) fired a shot in the 63rd minute of play that whistled over cross bar.

Maine will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when the Black Bears travel to America East rival UMBC.
